Hi Kenny,

Always nice to hear from you..I am enjoying the variety of things you are doing and the apparent forward positive movement!

There are clips of 40 or so of my compositions on my website if you find the time to listen to some of them..Any comments from a mentor such as yourself greatly appreciated..

All the best!

Kenny,

Thank You for all of your work you share with us, especially your book. It is truly changing my life if such a positive way, breaking down years of struggle. I’m thankful that you refer to singers in the book, and it would be wonderful if you put out something with even more specifics towards the vocalist. Maybe an article on your site? Well anyway, thanks again!!

Hi Kenny,
I’m reading your book for the second time. It’s changed the way I think about music and the way I play.
Thanks,
Denis

Hi Kenny,

I am deeply challenged by some of the statements in your book. Thank you!

Irene Williams November 14, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Dear Kenny Werner,
I heard you in the master class yesterday at SF Conservatory. I enjoyed the amazingly generous two hours with you and the young students in the audience. Last year I found a fine jazz teacher who has patiently taken me through the first stages of relearning piano music. With the freedom of not straining to see written notes, I’m having a ball, so yesterday was another blow to fearful approach to piano. Thanks so much.

Hey Kenny,

I got my first taste of your music and effortless mastery approach about 10 years ago when I was studying at the New School and attended your clinic. I was also heavily interested in buddhism at the time so it was perfect timing. For various reasons, I did not follow up on your ideas and even quit playing piano altogether for a couple of years (“ill never be as good as herbie/kenny/chick/keith…” and other similar reasons). About five years ago I got back into music slowly but surely, and just this past year have been sucked in to it completely. Some of the credit for this turn of events goes to you and your book. I’m still very early in the process of unlearning some destructive habits and learning better ones, but I’m feeling really good about the direction. And why wouldn’t I? After all, I am a master!

Thank you for your kind and generous spirit!

Hello Kenny!

I just started reading your book, “Effortless Mastery’ this morning and looked you up on the web. So far, it is a great read and I’m hopeful it will help me break out of my playing and life shell.

Thanks!

Hi!

Your book is an absolute inspiration to me as a formerly self-conscious musician, and in all facets of my life! I am a jazz pianist and have recently come to see that in order to open up worlds of musical and professional opportunities, I want to teach myself to sight-read (much more efficiently). I can almost taste the joy of looking at a page of music and having it flow from my fingers to my ears, as I have never been able to do.
I was wondering if you have any specific, technical suggestions for HOW to practice sight-reading, and how to apply the principles of Effortless Mastery to such a skill as this; i’m having trouble conceptualizing a meditative sight-reading practice since i’ve only thus far applied these techniques to improvisation and to prepared pieces.

Thanks for your help! Keep spreading the message of freedom,

Neil

Hi Mr.Werner!

Unfortunately I only discovered your music this year here in Portugal, but fortunately I bought almost all of your albuns! Your music, and your way of thinking and living music is absolutely awesome and inspiring! I don’t know if this is true, but I found some similarities with the japanese zen buddhism like “vacuum”/”absolute zero” as a state of being in the most true present, or “satoro” (awakening), or even the relaxation of nothing expect… Next year I’ll try to attend to NYU’s Steinhardt College of Music’s Master Degree in Jazz Performance (piano), I really hope to meet you there (it would be like a dream come true)…
In my myspace I have two tunes wich are “free playing” with improvised piano and live improvised electronics, if you have a couple of minutes it would be an honour if you listen…
Once again thank you so much for your music and your literature!!!

Greetings from Portugal

Renato Diz

Dave Brosseau July 24, 2010 at 10:10 am

I just finished reading Effortless Mastery. It was a very liberating experience. I felt like it was written for and about me. It is reassuring to know I’m not alone. Aside from the enlightenment and tools it provides (which I look forward to working with), I came away with the following new perspective.

Accepting the premise presented in the book I see four possible paths foward.
1. I could stop playing music all together. Completely give up.
2. I could continue to play but give up any dream of attaining mastery in any sense.
3. I could continue to work as I have been believing eventually I’ll reach my goal.
4. I could learn “not to care” and accept whatever the future holds.

Knowing #1 and #2 are giving up, and accepting that #3 is impossible, the only option left is #4, to learn “not to care”. This is both liberating and sad, perhaps like going through a divorce (although I have not experienced that). I feel like I have to experience “the greiving process” and be reborn to leave #3 behind. It’s liberating to be done with it, forever, to be done with the stress, the dread, the worry. But now I don’t know if I’ll ever achieve my goal and I have to be content with that. At the same time, it is clear that this is the best chance, the only chance, that I may someday achieve it. Like a divorce, I can’t begin to rebuild until I go through the pain of seperation from the old way of thinking. At the same, time I know I have to do it to move forward, regardless of what waits ahead. Mr. Werner, thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
