On Tuesday, August 17, Half Note Records will release Kenny Werner’s largest
and most ambitious project to date – No Beginning, No End – featuring Joe Lovano,
Judi Silvano, a string quartet, percussion ensemble, 40+ woodwinds and a large choir.
The piece is a tribute to Werner’s late daughter Katheryn,
who passed away unexpectedly and tragically in 2006.
The eventual work that became No Beginning, No End was based off a poem
Werner wrote in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The wind ensemble was recorded at NYU Steinhardt’s theater in the summer of 2009.
Dutch filmmaker Søren Jensen was able to document the project on video,
to be released as a full-length documentary project later this year.

Kenny, Days later, after viewing all the videos, Katheryn is still within me.
With tears and smiles.

I am 65 and an aspiring and happy marimba student… I have found your conscious point of view of learning to play with grace and calm an anchor in a wild sea of doubts… but “who you are in this musical composition” says it like an quite avalanche to me… we are human, we are eternal, we are small and we are vast… we are vulnerable and we are giants of caring… you have this umbilical chord to the Universe through your beloved daughter… THANK YOU DEEPLY FOR SHARING THIS LOVE, THIS HEARTBREAK, THIS TRANSFORMATION… with warm gratitude and love…
Nothing pretentious about this music. It is very honest and really emanates from Kenny’s soul! I enjoyed the trailers very much.
If you want to think new thoughts about what makes music meaningful, try watching these beautiful videos.
Kenny, everything you do you do it great.Always with reason.
Wonderful project. As usual for Kenny’s work.
Just one small question: isn’t Søren Jensen a Danish filmmaker? I’ve lived many years in Denmark and one of the most annoying things is when somebody calls a Dane a Dutch… Please, Andrew, be careful with these kind of things.
cheers!
Massimo
Dear Kenny,
I have had the privilege of hearing you play and speak in Portugal and was very moved by both. You are a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing your daughter in such an incredible way- through a wonderful composition inspired by her . I look forward to hearing the whole CD. May you find comfort in your precious memories of Katherine!

Kenny, just listened to the clip of “No Beginning, No End” and it touched me deeply. Been having alot of trouble spiritually these past few years but you, your words and your music speak love and took a firm grip on the empty god space inside me. Even though we aren’t in contact you are thought of fondly and often. Lori
