Kenny’s Health Update

Kenny Werner at the Piano

For my friends who don’t know, this next share of mine is related to the fact that
on May 19th I had Lap Band Surgery, which is a safe form of weight loss surgery.

I’m doing spiritual practices every morning, and taking good care of myself.

But no carbs! It’s as if a vail has been lifted off of me.

I feel like my untapped energy and creativity is beginning to blossom.

Great energy and outlook without coffee and any of the other crutches I was using
to get through my day.

I’ve lost 40 lbs but that’s not the most profound change.

I feel like John Travolta in the movie “Phenomenon” after he was struck by lightning.
Before he was just a good old boy who was intellectually lazy.
After he gets struck by lightning he gets more and more brilliant
and more and more fascinated by all subjects to learn.
Eventually he shows beyond genius tendencies—but then he dies of a brain tumor.

I feel like that minus the tumor.

All the great things in my head that I’ve always been too lazy to act on, I’m starting to act on.
Look out – I think my creative output is just beginning!

This is rather fortunate because my next project is to write a concerto
for alto sax and piano, and to learn an alto and piano concerto
written by Anders Koppel.

The alto is played by his brilliant son, Benjamin Koppel.
As I delve into the piano part of Anders’ piece I am dealing with pianistic flourishes
that I’ve never played before, certainly not in public. 50 pages of them!!!

Had I not been experiencing this awakening I would have opened the music,
taken a look and told Anders, “You’ve got the wrong guy.”

He may in fact have the wrong guy but I am enjoying practicing it so much that,
although it’s way beyond anything I’ve ever done pianistically,
I’m going to give it a shot for the rest of the year and see if I can adapt to it.

Again, in my view there’s no failure in music so I may play it or I may not,
but I am enjoying practicing it without the pressure to do either.

In other words my friends, I’m feeling quite good these days!

Kenny Werner’s Farewell to ArtistShare Participants

It’s really been a strange, sometimes horrible, and lately, surreal time in my life,

but throughout it all I still get the sense that once one embraces the concept of Shakti,

that this whole world is made up of a scintillating substance known in Indian traditions as Shakti,

that one understands that Shakti is not necessarily kind, compassionate or easy,

that it can cut like a knife,

and that it’s only purpose in God’s play,

is the total transformation of human beings.

It (Shakti) will destroy the ego (no matter how long it takes),

provide life’s lessons,

balance and eradicate karma,

and deliver a soul inevitably beyond the cycle of birth and death,

even though most of us don’t know that that is our goal!

Somehow it makes me more resilient just knowing that experience has a purpose;
and, as my divine teacher has said, everything happens for the best.

God bless everyone.

I wish you all a successful journey through life and that all your heart’s desires are fulfilled.

Hello Friends,

Please indulge me as I am making a personal appeal here.

This year (2007), I have made strides in my career. I’ve been very fortunate in my work. I know that I am doing very well in comparative terms. I play the music I want to play. All that I play honors me and my creativity. There is nothing I have to do just for the money.

But there is a level that I am working my whole life to achieve. It’s not about fame; it’s only a little about fortune, at least enough fortune to be able to stay home and be with my wife and compose if I want to. No, it’s more about access. Access to the clubs, concert halls, festivals, compositional commissions, etc. Projects that actually reach people, where the word gets out that you’ve actually created something.

I’m not far from that. But it’s like the joke, “Watch out for that last step, it’s a doozy!”

It is very hard to move up from station to station to the kind of work you’ve always wanted to do, that you felt you should do. Along the way there are little openings, little possibilities.

One upward move happened this year when I finally recorded for Blue Note Records. This is the Mecca of jazz music, and perhaps the only company left where they do the complete job. I have been so gratified to be there, and I made for them what I think is one of my best CDs ever. It’s called “Lawn Chair Society.”

It has gotten such respect in so many places. I set out to do something really special and I think I have.

But even if you record God’s favorite recording of all time, we are all still subject to a little thing in our culture called the bottom line.

As much as Blue Note loves what I did, they are subjected to scrutiny from larger forces that control their destiny. Therefore I am calling out to all my friends:

I know that there are at least 90,000 people out there who’ve read Effortless Mastery. Many of you have written me and told me that the book changed your life. I know that many people have had similar experiences at one of my performances. I have been gratified to know that I’ve helped your life in some way. But now I need your help. If my book changed your life, or significantly improved it; if one of my concerts greatly enriched you and you never forgot it; if I have taught you and my teaching was a major help towards reaching your goals musically and otherwise; to all those out there who have good feelings towards me; Please buy “Lawn Chair Society“.

And for those of you who qualify for the above statement who belong to NARAS, the Recording Academy and therefore have a vote for the Grammys, Please vote for me after you’ve heard the CD.

I am listed in best jazz instrumental solo for my tune, The 13th Day. #260. And I am there for best jazz instrumental album. #234.

If one or both of these things are achieved, sales or awards, I will have a strong case for doing my next Blue Note CD, which has been a big step forward in my career. All that said, I wouldn’t ask this if I didn’t feel it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. But you’ll have to be the judge of that. That will be a great help to me and you will all be the producers of my next effort.
